How Gold Jewellery Pricing Works

Gold jewellery price in India is calculated based on several components. Understanding these helps you verify whether the price quoted by a jeweller is fair.

1. Gold Metal Value

The base cost is determined by the weight of the jewellery and its purity. A 22K gold piece contains 91.6% pure gold. So a 10-gram 22K item contains 9.16 grams of actual gold.

Gold Value = 24K Rate × Weight (g) × Purity Factor

2. Making Charges

Jewellers add making charges for the labour and craftsmanship involved in creating the piece. This is typically 8–25% of the gold value, or a fixed amount per gram. Machine-made jewellery usually has lower making charges than handcrafted pieces.

3. GST

The Government of India levies GST on gold jewellery purchases: 3% on the gold value and 5% on making charges. This is separate from any customs duties on imported gold.

4. Wastage

Some jewellers add a wastage charge (typically 3–5%) to account for gold lost during the manufacturing process. Always ask if wastage is included in the quoted price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gold prices and jewellery calculations in India.

Gold price in India is based on the international spot price of gold in USD, converted to INR using the current exchange rate, adjusted for import duties and local levies. The price varies slightly by city due to local taxes and transportation costs.
24K gold is 99.9% pure and is used for investment coins and bars — it's too soft for jewellery. 22K gold (91.6% pure) is the most common for Indian jewellery. 18K gold (75% pure) is used for diamond and gemstone jewellery as it's more durable.
Yes. GST of 3% applies to the gold value, and 5% GST applies to making charges separately. This is charged in addition to the base gold and making charge costs.
Making charges are the fees a jeweller charges for the labour involved in designing and crafting the jewellery. They are typically 8–25% of the gold value for handcrafted pieces, and lower for machine-made jewellery.
Enter the current 24K gold price per gram (or use our configured price), select your gold purity (24K, 22K, 18K, etc.), enter the weight in grams, and optionally enter making charges, GST, and additional charges. The calculator updates the result instantly.
Wastage refers to the small amount of gold lost during the manufacturing process (cutting, melting, polishing). Jewellers may add 2–5% as a wastage charge. Always ask your jeweller if wastage is included in the making charges or charged separately.
